Preparing for 5G-Advanced and 6G: Building a Future-Ready Network Validation Testbed
As networks evolve toward 5G-Advanced and the industry begins preparing for 6G, network validation is becoming increasingly complex.
Future networks will combine cloud-native cores, advanced mobility, NTN, AI-assisted optimization, integrated sensing, and increasingly dense device environments. As a result, engineers need to validate not only individual functions, but also the interaction between the RAN, core, UE, service traffic, mobility, and radio conditions.
The key question is no longer simply whether the network operates.
It is whether the network can maintain stable and measurable performance under realistic and repeatable stress conditions.
Why 5G-Advanced and 6G Require Repeatable Validation
As 5G-Advanced capabilities are introduced, the end-to-end architecture becomes more flexible, but that flexibility also creates more test variables.
Mobility behavior, handover performance, latency, throughput, signaling, service continuity, network load, and UE behavior can all change depending on the radio and traffic environment.
As networks evolve toward 5G-Advanced and 6G, validation scenarios will become even more demanding. Engineers will need to consider high-speed mobility, NTN-related propagation conditions, dense device populations, AI-driven network behavior, and new service models.
Field testing remains essential, but it has an inherent limitation: many critical conditions are difficult to reproduce with sufficient consistency.
A controlled validation environment therefore needs to support a repeatable cycle:
Field Observation → Lab Reproduction → Measurement → Analysis → Optimization → Re-test
The value of the lab is not to replace the field, but to make problematic field conditions reproducible, measurable, and comparable.
Reproducing Both RF Conditions and UE Behavior
A meaningful network testbed must reproduce two elements at the same time: the radio environment and the UE traffic environment.
XCAT-MAIS is used to reproduce dynamic radio conditions, including fading, Doppler, interference, mobility-related channel variation, and other RF conditions that are difficult to control in live networks.
XCAL-MUbox complements this by generating scalable traffic through real communication modules. This allows engineers to observe actual modem behavior, signaling, throughput, handovers, and service performance under defined RF and load conditions.
The combination is important because RF emulation alone cannot represent how real devices respond, while UE traffic generation alone cannot reproduce the dynamic radio conditions experienced in the field.
Together, the two systems provide a controlled environment where engineers can correlate:
RF Condition ↔ UE Behavior ↔ Network Response ↔ Service Performance
This makes it possible to compare the same scenario before and after parameter changes, software updates, or network optimization.
High-Speed Railway Validation as a Practical Example
LIG Accuver has applied this approach to a high-speed, high-density railway communication testbed developed in cooperation with GERI(Gumi Electronics & Information Technology Research Institute).
The environment was designed to reproduce conditions including speeds above 350 km/h, severe Doppler effects, rapidly changing RF conditions, frequent handovers, and high-density user traffic.
In this configuration, XCAT-MAIS recreates the dynamic radio and mobility conditions, while XCAL-MUbox generates scalable modem-based UE traffic.
This enables engineers to perform repeatable measurements of network and device behavior under highly dynamic conditions, including handover stability, signaling performance, throughput, service continuity, and overall network response.
More importantly, the same scenario can be executed again after network optimization.
That repeatability allows engineers to distinguish between an actual improvement and a change caused simply by different field conditions.
This is one of the main advantages of controlled validation:
The ability to measure performance under the same conditions, repeatedly.
Extending the Testbed Toward 6G Validation
The same validation principle can be extended beyond current 5G SA testing.
As 5G-Advanced capabilities are introduced and networks continue to evolve toward 6G, test environments will increasingly need to support more complex combinations of mobility, NTN, AI-assisted operation, integrated sensing, heterogeneous devices, and dynamic traffic.
The architecture of the testbed therefore needs to remain modular and scalable. The key is not to predict every future 6G feature today, but to build a validation environment that can evolve as new radio, mobility, traffic, and device conditions emerge.
Reproduce. Measure. Optimize. Repeat.
This repeatable validation cycle is the foundation for the journey from today’s 5G SA networks through 5G-Advanced and toward 6G.
